This exhibit, which commemorates the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, focuses on the war in Kentucky and the Ohio Valley region. The exhibit takes a thematic, rather than chronological, approach to the war, covering the turmoil of the 1850's and focusing on the growing division between the north and south, resulting in the Civil War. Themes covered include War and Homefront, Medicine, Death and Mourning, Prisioners of War, and Communication.
The Filson has one of the finest Civil War manuscript collections in the state. Among the manuscripts on display for this exhibit are letters, documents, photos, and prints describing camp life, death and mourning, Civil War-era medicine, prisoners of war, communication, and women and the home front. The exhibit features artifacts such as flags, weapons, uniforms, dresses, and medical instruments. All items displayed belong to The Filson's collections.
