Search Tips for the Filson's Online Catalog

Two basic search processes, Browse and Keyword, will get you to the information you seek. Browse helps identify items when you're not quite sure what you're looking for. If you enter a search term in the search box and select, for example, Subject Browse from the dropdown, you will be given a list of subject terms from which to choose.

Browse allows you to refine your search. You may even find a search term you hadn't thought of! When you find a subject in which you are interested, simply click on the subject term and the catalog will display all associated item(s).

Keyword searches are useful when looking for specific topics. Select General Keyword from the dropdown list mentioned above and then type in your search term. A search for "houseboat" retrieves two records; a search for "civil war" retrieves 2582.

If you retrieve too many results for any search, results can be limited to collection type by selecting from the "Limit by" menu illustrated above.

SEARCHING BY PERSONAL NAME

When searching for a personal name make sure you enter the last name first, for example "Clay, Henry" in order to get the appropriate results. A search for "Henry Clay" will take you to "Henry County" or "Henry, Clement S."
