Brandon Winford, Jacob Lee, and Kelly WilliamsThis summer, The Filson provided hands on archival experience for two Boehl Summer Interns. Brandon Winford from North Carolina Central University and Kelly Williams from the University of Louisville each spent two months in the Special Collections Department learning about cataloging archival and manuscript material and experiencing first hand how a historical society’s special collections department operates.

Jacob Lee, who recently joined the Filson staff full-time and was himself a 2005 Boehl intern, served as Brandon and Kelly’s primary supervisor and mentor. Brandon described his time at The Filson and in Louisville (NCCU is in Durham) as very enjoyable and a wonderful learning experience. Kelly echoed that sentiment, saying “My experience as a Filson intern has helped me determine that I want to pursue a career in archives.” Jacob enjoyed being the teacher instead of the student while working with Brandon and Kelly, and hopes they benefited from the experience. There seems no doubt they did.
