The Fall 2007 Civil War Field Institute made its way to Murfreesboro, TN, the weekend of Sept. 21-22, to take an in-depth look at the Battle of Stones River, one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War.

The weekend started off with a reception where old acquaintances were once again reunited, as well as some new faces welcomed to the group. Historian James Lee McDonough set the tone for the weekend with a keynote address Friday evening giving an overview of the Stones River Campaign. Saturday was then spent with an entire day touring the Stones River National Battlefield and the surrounding areas, led by Park Ranger Jim Lewis, who gave a riveting account of the fierce battle waged in the winter of 1862 – 1863.

The weekend ended with a viewing of Hallowed Ground, a lantern tour of Stones River National Cemetery, which was a fitting close to another successful Institute. All veterans and newcomers are welcome to join The Filson for the Spring 2008 Institute, which will visit the sites of the Battles of Forts Henry and Donelson. More information will be available soon.
